The Wood/Furniture Program focuses on "studio furniture," which occupies the fertile borderland between the disciplines of industrial design, fashion, architecture, and sculpture. The program emphasizes the development of making skills (focusing on woodworking, upholstery, and metalworking), drawing and computer-based design, and theoretical investigation of furniture as a cultural artifact. Students in the program learn to develop a conceptually sophisticated and professionally achieved body of work suitable for gallery exhibition, as well as to develop limited editions or small-scale production runs of their designs. Furthermore, wood/furniture students understand the languages of industrial design and interior architecture and are confident working collaboratively with other designers, manufacturers, and contractors.
